Working in Health or Social Care? Don’t Be a Dummy About Lifting and Handling Training

Did you know that statistically, health and social care workers are at high risk of work-related lifting and handling injury?

According to the HSE report for 2014/15 each year in the health and social care sector there are 86,000 self-reported non-fatal workplace injuries, with 27% of these involving lifting and handling.

Workplace injury leads to around 0.7 million working days lost, with one third of ‘over 7-day’ absences due to lifting and handling accidents.

The good news is that statistics show there is a downward trend in incidence rate of all self-reported workplace injury in the health and social care sector. What can YOU do to ensure that this trend continues and your staff avoid workplace accidents caused by lifting and handling?

Effective training can teach your staff to perform necessary tasks in the safest possible manner. In moving and handling exercises, using a ‘live’ volunteer is often impractical and therefore the use of training manikins can be especially useful.

At Ruth Lee Ltd we have been working with people who save lives for over 30 years. In that time, we have become the European market leader of rescue training manikins and have countless customers working in a diverse range of industries, such as the Fire and Rescue Service, Police Force, Military and Health and Social Care. We have worked alongside the NHS and major Care Providers to create a range of products which were designed to support patient handling and/or evacuation training.

We pride ourselves on reacting to the needs of our customers – we regularly consult with them in the design and development process of our manikins and have manufactured ‘ad-hoc’ manikins for customers which have gone on to be best sellers within the industry they were intended for.

This includes our patient handling manikin which is perfect for manual handling or emergency evacuation procedure training. With obesity on the rise, we have also developed a range of bariatric manikins to allow you to teach your staff the safest and most effective ways to manoeuvre larger people in their care.

With staff and patient/resident health and safety a major consideration within the health and care industries, there has never been a better time to evaluate your training. Ruth Lee can offer expert advice on using manikins to achieve your training goals.

We are exhibiting at Health Plus Care on 28-29 June 2017 at the ExCeL London. If you are attending, be sure to visit our stand (D46) to discuss your own training requirements.
